Hiccups, Sneezing, and Yawning in Newborns

These are physiological body responses and are common in healthy newborn babies.

Hiccups or हिचकी, are produced by spasmodic contractions of diaphragm and are characterized by sudden, noisy and jerky retractions of suprasternal notch and xiphisternal region. They usually occur immediately after a feed due to distension of stomach and irritation of diaphragm.

Sneezing or छींकना, occurs due to irritation of the nostrils by secretions and should not be considered as a sign of upper respiratory infection.

Yawning or ऊंची लेना, is common before going to sleep or on waking up. The presence of these physiological responses should be viewed as positive attribute of a healthy baby.

इन क्रियात्मक शरीर प्रतिक्रियाओं की उपस्थिति स्वस्थ नवजात शिशुओं में सामान्य होती है।
