Breastfeeding jaundice and Breast milk jaundice
breastfeeding Jaundice and breast milk jaundice are exaggerated physiological jaundice. There is unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. If direct or conjugated hyperbilirubinemia is present, alternative diagnosis must be explored.
- Breastfeeding Jaundice
Related to quantity i.e. volume of milk
MECHANISM:Decreased gut motility and increased reabsorption
Usually occur < 7days
TREATMENT: Increased feeding or formula supplements
- Breast Milk Jaundice
Related to quality i.e enzyme present in milk
MECHANISM:Decreased level/activity of 2,3 UDP glucuronyl transferase and as a result Decreased conjugation
Usually occur >7 days
TREATMENT: Feed baby formula (formula replacement
