Expected Calorie and Protein requirement is calculated by :
Expected weight calculation
Q- 5-year child having the weight of 10kg. Calculate expected calories and protein.
The expected weight of the child is 18 kg
Use formula[ age(years) x2 ]+ 8
For expected calorie requirements
Method 1 (bedside calculation)
Upto 1 year:100 cal /kg of expected weight
Above 1 year :1000cal +( 100 cal for each year of age above 1 year)
for 5 year -1000 cal + 400 cal =1400 cal
Method 2
For the first 10 kg – 100 calories/ kg
For next 10 kg -1000cal + 50 calories /kg
For the next 10 kg – 1500cal+ 20 calories/kg
So Expected calories are (1000+400) =1400 calories
For expected protein requirements
0-6month -2 g/kg/day
6month -1 year – 1.5 g/kg/ day
1 – 12 years – 1g/kg/day
>12 years – 2g/kg/day
So Expected protein requirement is 18 g
